O'Bryan Pitches Furman Softball To Saturday Split At Mountaineer Classic

Sophomore Tosses Two-Hitter In 5-1 Win Over Queens

Boone, N.C. – Sophomore Lily O'Bryan tossed a complete-game, two-hitter to lead Furman to a 5-1 victory over Queens in the final game of the day Saturday at the Mountaineer Softball Classic. Appalachian State downed the Paladins in game one, 15-1.

Game 1: Appalachian State 15, Furman 1 (5 Inn.)

Sophie Moshos held Furman to a run on two hits and Appalachian scored 15 runs over the first four innings on its way to a 15-1 victory over Furman in the opening game of the day on Saturday.

The Mountaineers, who improved to 15-5 on the year, plated three runs in the first inning before pushing four across in the bottom of the second. Leah Gore keyed a six-run outburst in the third inning with a grand slam.

Gore finished 2-for-2 with four RBI while Macy Hamby went 3-for-3 with three runs and three RBI. Grace Barrett collected two hits and drove in three runs for the Mountaineers, who totaled 11 hits and took advantage of seven walks.

Moshos (7-2) fanned eight batters and issued just one walk in the five-inning, complete-game performance to earn her seventh win of the season. Furman's Jamison Noonan (0-7) took the loss after allowing 13 runs on 11 hits and four walks in four innings of work.

Sophomore Rachel Hawkins ended Appalachian State's shutout bid with a solo home run to center field in the top of the fifth for Furman's lone run.

Game 2: Furman 5, Queens 1

Lily O'Bryan picked up her first win of the season in the circle and four Paladins collected two hits as Furman downed Queens, 5-1, in the night cap.

O'Bryan, who improved to 1-3 on the season, needed just 90 pitched to toss seven innings. The Cleveland, Tenn., native carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning and got help from her defense with a pair of late double plays to finish off the Royals. She allowed just one runs on the night while walking five batters and recording three strikeouts.

Sylvia Burroughs and Rachel Hawkins put the Paladins in front with RBI base hits in the top of the third inning and Hope Marshburn added a third run in the frame with an RBI groundout. Burroughs doubled to right field in the fourth and Kate Stoltzfus scored from first base after the ball was misplayed in right field. Kristyn Embler added an insurance run two innings later with a solo blast to center field.

AB Cipalla, Burroughs, Hawkins, and Embler each registered two hits for Furman. Stoltzfus drew a pair of walks and scored two runs for the Paladins.
