Record-Setting Day For Paladin Seniors At 15th Annual Furman Track & Field Invitational

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Senior Brooke Mosteller established a new school and meet record with a time of 10:50.77 in the 3,000m Steeplechase, while fellow senior Lee Gilmer set a new Furman record with a time of 4:04.36 in the Blue Shoes Elite Mile, which was held Saturday in conjunction with the 15th annual Furman Invitational at the Irwin Belk Track Complex for Track and Field and Kelsey-West Track in Greenville, S.C.  Paladin senior Erin Barker also set a new meet record in the 1,500m, winning the event with a time of 4:38.58.

Donnie Cowart of Ragged Mountain Racing won the Blue Shoes Elite Mile event, turning in a time of 4:00.62, coming in just shy of the sub-four minute mile mark.

The Paladins picked up first-place finishes in 12 individual events and one relay event at the meet.  Besides Mosteller's win in the steeplechase and Barker's victory in the 1,500m, Furman senior Erin McChristian won the 100m hurdles with a time of 17.13, and rookie Shannon Murphy took first with a time of 59.76 in the 400m.  Sophomore Alexa Wilton recorded a time of 1:07.58 for first in the 400m hurdles, and the Paladin 4x400m relay team of Barker, freshmen Blair Burke, Hannah Schilpp, and Emily Zizzi won the event after turning in a time of 4:10.61.

For the men's team, sophomore John Klecker took first place in the 1,500m with a time of 4:00.12, while fellow sophomore placed first with a time of 49.67 in the 400m.  Junior Cortez Johnson won the 100m after posting a time of 10.76, and junior Raul Rodriquez took the lead with a time of 23.13 in the 200m.

In the field events, freshman Gretchen Gabrielson won the women's discus with a throw of 98-02, while junior Scott DesMarais placed first with a mark of 147-08 in the men's discus then won the shot put with a throw of 44-0.50.

Several meet records were broken at the event. Besides the two records set by Mosteller and Barker in the collegiate women's meet, Malia Ellington of the Community School of Davidson established two new high school girls' records after winning the 1,600m with a time of 5:01.40 then taking the 3,200m title with a time of 10:57.62.

In the high school boys' meet, D'Ante Flemming of Greer set a new record with a time of 49.64 in the 400m dash, while Pickens' Hunter Harkins broke the record with a time of 57.71 in the 400m hurdles.  In the field events, Bauvier Jackson of Broome recorded a throw of 152'9" in the discus, setting a new meet record.  Greer's relay teams established two records, with the 4x100m team posting a time of 43.44, then the 4x400m relay taking the title after tallying a time of 3:30.75.

The Furman track and field teams will compete at the Southern Conference Championships April 21-22 in Cullowhee, N.C.
