GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Furman senior Wilkerson Given finished 33rd with a time of 9:06.94 in the 3,000m steeplechase Friday night at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field East Regional at the Irwin Belk Track inside of Aggie Stadium on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, N.C.
"Wilkerson hit a barrier on the first lap fairly hard and just wasn't able to get back in the race," said Paladin head track and field coach Robert Gary following the meet. "Our staff is very proud of his season, from earning All-Region in cross country, to setting a school record in the 3,000m indoors, to qualifying for the NCAA Regional outdoors in an event he didn't try until this year."
A native of Birmingham, Ala., Given just began competing in the steeplechase this spring and qualified for the regional meet for the first time in his career. His entry time of 8:59.05 ranked 33rd out of the 48 athletes heading into the event.
Given landed a spot on the league's all-conference team after placing third with a time of 9:09.59 in the steeplechase at the Southern Conference Outdoor Championship meet, then won the event at the Bob Pollock Invitational on May 3. He took fourth-place with a personal-best time at the Virginia Challenge meet to qualify for the NCAA Regionals.
The top 12 finishers from Friday night's regional advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, which will be held in Eugene, Ore., June 5-8.
