JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Furman junior Tripp Hurt placed sixth with a time of 8:44.28 in the 3,000m Steeplechase Friday at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field East Regional Thursday in Jacksonville, Fla., shattering the school record and qualifying for the NCAA Championships, which will be held in Eugene, Ore., June 12-14.
Hurt, who qualified for the regional meet after recording the previous Furman record of 8:58.13 to take first place at the SoCon Outdoor Championships, finished second in his heat, qualifying automatically for the championships after claiming one of the top three spots in the heat.
"Tripp ran a great race and really came in prepared," said Furman assistant coach Chris Neal following the race. "We used the last five weeks as a pretty intense training camp with the idea of running a huge PR here and making the NCAA Championships. Tripp has really bought into the program this year and become a great runner. We are very excited to have him represent Furman out in Eugene!"
The national semifinals of the 3,000m Steeplechase will be held at 5:35 p.m. Pacific time on Thursday, June 12, with the finals scheduled for 2:57 p.m. Pacific time on Saturday, June 14.
