RALEIGH, N.C. -- Senior Sinead Haughey set a new Paladin record in the 5,000m while sophomore Allie Buchalski broke the Furman record in the 3,000m Steeplechase as the Paladin track and field teams opened the 2015 outdoor season Friday at the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, N.C.

Haughey recorded a time of 16:26.05, breaking the old record of 16:57.99, which she set last season, by more than 30 seconds and finished 14th overall in the highly competitive field.  Rookie Emma Mashburn also competed in the event, turning in a time of 17:09.95 for 46th place.

Buchalski finished second in the Steeplechase event, turning in a time of 10:18.61, to break the former record of  10:49.21, set by Brooke Mosteller in 2012.

"Obviously, for both of these women to open up the outdoor season at personal bests and with school records is very impressive," said Furman assistant coach Rita Gary following the meet.  "Allie especially looked great in the Steeplechase, as it was her first time contesting the event, and her performance tonight will most likely qualify her for the NCAA regionals.  Sinead looked so good tonight in the 5,000m.  She held back a little bit, knowing that she is racing the 10,000m next weekend in California.  I'm really looking forward to seeing what she can do in her marquee event at Stanford."

Rookie Jacquelyn Crow placed 20th in the 1,500m to lead the Paladins, recording a time of 4:31.72.  Freshman Becca Cooley was 67th with a time of 4:41.43, while sophomore Maddie Wolfe turned in a time of 4:43.87 for 77th place.  Sophomore Ann Sisson placed 105th in the event at 4:51.53.

Sophomore Laura Miller competed in the 10,000m, posting a time of 35:48.82 for 24th place.

For the Furman men's team, senior Tripp Hurt placed seventh with a time of 3:50.20 in the 1,500m, followed closely by senior William Ivey, who crossed the line in 3:50.57.  Sophomore Nate Riech finished 29th at 3:54.49, and freshman Austin Sprague placed 33rd with a time of 3:55.12.  Senior James Perez recorded a time of 4:03.08 in the event, placing 99th.

In the 5,000m, sophomore Tanner Hinkle finished 39th with at time of 14:27.19, while sophomore Matt Lange was 70th at 14:49.26.  Sophomore Josh Brickell competed in the 10,000m, turning in a time of 30:21.23 for 24th place.

The meet continues on Saturday with events beginning at 11 a.m.  Live results from the Raleigh Relays will be available at http://www.flashresults.com/.
