Furman Distance Athletes Qualify For NCAA East Preliminaries

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Nine Furman distance athletes in six events have qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships East Preliminaries, which will be hosted by the University of Kentucky, May 25-27, in Louisville, Ky. 

Sophomore Ryan Adams has qualified in the 1,500m, junior Troy Reeder earned a spot in the 3,000m Steeplechase, and freshman Mason Coppi will run in the 5,000m.  Three Furman athletes, juniors Tanner Hinkle, Josh Brickell, and Frank Lara, will compete in the men's 10,000m.

On the women's side, junior Allie Buchalski and freshman Savannah Carnahan will represent the Paladins in the 5,000m, and rookie Gabrielle Jennings has qualified in the 3,000m Steeplechase.

"We are very excited in our fourth year to significantly increase the number of NCAA qualifiers," said Furman head coach Robert Gary.  "All of our qualifiers return for the next one to three years, and that's what we plan to build on going forward.  The great part about track is you have to show up on the right day with the right fitness, and that is what makes the qualifying process so exciting."

Adams, who hails from Hudson, Ohio, ranks 15th in the East with a time of 3:42.90 in the 1,500m.  The Paladin record holder with a time of 3:42.25, he notched his qualifying time at the Raleigh Relays in March.  Reeder, a native of Fishers, Ind., holds the top time in the East in the 3,000m Steeplechase.  He posted a time of 8:40.57 at the Stanford Invitational in March to qualify for the prelims, and he holds the Furman record of 8:36.51 in the event.  A native of Dana Point, Calif., Coppi notched a time of 14:10. 60 in the 5,000m at the Virginia Challenge to qualify for the prelims. 

In the 10,000m, Hinkle, a native of Mason, Mich., set a new Paladin record with a time of 29:15.99, the 20th-best time in the East, at the Stanford Invitational in March.  Brickell's top time of 29:24.45, which he posted at the Raleigh Relays in March, places him 29th in the East, while Lara's time of 29:32.54, also recorded at Raleigh, ranks 34th.

Buchalski, who hails from Johns Creek, Ga., leads the East with a time of 15:35.55 in the 5,000m, a new Paladin record which she set in March at the Raleigh Relays.  Carnahan, a native of Cumming, Ga., ranks 43rd in the East with a time of 16:21.18, which she posted at the Virginia Challenge in April.  Jennings, who came to Furman from Sidell, La., posted a time of 10:25.02 in the 3,000m Steeplechase at the Raleigh Relays to qualify.  Her time currently ranks 41st in the East.  

The first round of the men's 1,500m will be held on Thursday, May 25, at 6 p.m., with the quarterfinals slated for 6:45 p.m. on Saturday, May 27.  The semifinals of the men's 10,000m will be held on Thursday at 9:40 p.m.  The 3,000m Steeplechase quarterfinals are scheduled for Friday.  The women's race will commence at 8:20 p.m., followed by the men at 9 p.m.  The women's 5,000m semifinal will begin at 8:05 p.m. on Saturday, followed by the men's race at 8:45 p.m.

The top 12 finishers in each event will advance to the NCAA Championships, which will be held in Eugene, Ore., June 7-10.
