SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The Furman cross country teams opened the 2017 season Friday with their second-consecutive Eye Opener Invitational titles at the Milliken Research Center in Spartanburg, S.C. The Paladin men scored 15 points for the win, while the Paladin women tallied 19 points in the victory.
Furman runners took the top nine scored spots in the men's 8K race. Junior Aaron Templeton won individual honors, placing first with a time of 25:04.3, followed by rookie Daniel Bernal in second with a time of 25:07.3. Senior Lee Shearer finished third with a time of 25:33.6, while sophomore Jake Ogden turned in a fourth-place finish with a time of 25:39.8. Freshman Trent Mandato finished fifth with a time of 25:40.1 in his collegiate debut, and fellow freshman Allen Clark posted a time of 25:51.0 for sixth place.
Junior Quintin McKinnish placed seventh at 26:13.1. Sophomore Thomas Moore placed eighth among the scoring runners with a time of 26:29.2, while sophomore Madison Daniel was ninth at 27:11.2. Senior Hayden Cox finished 21st with a time of 29:13.3.
The Paladin women claimed nine of the top 10 positions on the 5K course, as senior Allie Buchalski returned after a redshirt year to win the individual title with a time of 17:27.1. Sophomore Gabrielle Jennings placed third with a time of 17:44.9, and sophomore Emma Grace Hurley recorded a time of 18:00.4 for fourth place. Rookie Kristlin Gear finished fifth with a time of 18:06.8, followed by sophomore Grace Dwyer in sixth with a time of 18:08.1.
Senior Jacquelyn Crow crossed the line in 18:17.7 for seventh place, and sophomore Jennifer Stephenson placed eighth at 18:32.5. Sophomore Riley Burr was ninth at 18:44.3, and senior Becca Cooley finished 10th among scoring runners at 19:44.9. Freshman Marcella Perez placed 21st with a time of 20:31.9.
"I thought both teams ran very strongly," said Furman head coach Robert Gary. "We ran several freshman and thought they carried themselves very well. Allie and Aaron ran well within themselves, and we are looking forward to next weekend for sure.
"We have a ground breaking for our new facility Friday at 5 p.m. followed by our annual Stakeholder dinner, and then we will be running near full-strength Saturday at our Furman Invitational," added Gary.
The Paladins will compete at the Furman Invitational on September 9.
