GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman cross country teams swept the team titles at the fifth annual Furman Cross Country Classic Saturday morning in Greenville, S.C., defeating 17 teams.
The Furman women took five of the top six spots, winning the meet with 18 points. Clemson was second with 38 points, while Lee completed the top three at 33 points.
Senior Allie Buchalski returned from a redshirt year to win the individual title with a time of 20:30.42 on the 6K course. Sophomore Gabrielle Jennings placed second with a time of 20:42.39, wile sophomore Grace Dwyer was fourth after crossing the line in 20:59.38. Rookie Kristlin Gear and sophomore Emma Grace Hurley finished back-to-back in fifth and sixth place, respectively, to round out the Paladin scorers. Gear posted a time of 21:08.80, and Hurley completed the race in 21:11.46.
Paladin runners placed ninth through 12th, with sophomore Jennifer Stephenson finishing ninth at 21:39.73, followed by senior Jacquelyn Crow in tenth place with a time of 21:45.25. Sophomore Riley Burr recorded a time of 21:50.32 for 11th place, and freshman Emily Lane turned in a time of 21:52.31 to place 12th. Sophomore Anna Hayden finished 26th at 22:37.37, and rookie Anisa Burciaga was 34th at 23:06.06. Freshman Marcella Perez finished 66th with a time of 24:40.94.
The Paladin men took five of the top seven spots and eight of the top 11 positions in the race, scoring 25 points for the win. Mount Olive was second with 53 points, while Clemson claimed third place with 96 points.
Senior Tanner Hinkle led the Furman squad with a third place finish and a time of 23:59.00 on the 8K course. Junior Aaron Templeton was fourth with a time of 24:00.50, followed by sophomore Mason Coppi in fifth at 24:02.20. Senior Josh Brickell placed sixth with a time of 24:06.20, and sophomore Ryan Adams completed the Paladin scorers in seventh place after completing the course in 24:08.80.
Senior Troy Reeder posted a time of 24:15.40 to take ninth place, followed by senior Lee Shearer in tenth at 24:21.80. Freshman Daniel Bernal was 11th with a time of 24:23.20, and sophomore Jake Ogden recorded a 13th place finish with a time of 24:55.20. Rookies Allen Clark and Trent Mandato finished 14th and 15th, respectively. Clark posted a time of 24:58.30, while Mandato crossed the line in 25:04.60. Sophomore Thomas Moore scored a 19th place finish at 25:31.80, and junior Quintin McKinnish placed 35th at 26:08.10. Senior Hayden Cox notched a time of 27:51.90 for 97th place.
"Both programs performed very well," said Furman head coach Robert Gary at the conclusion of the meet. "I was very encouraged to see the pack grouping we established to the finish. Three weeks of focused training, and then we have our first look at several ranked teams at Louisville, which is the site of 2017 NCAA Championships."
Furman will compete at the Louisville Invitational in Louisville, Ky., on September 30.
