GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman men's cross country team is ranked 14th by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), while the Paladin women are ranked 29th, according to the national rankings released Tuesday.

The Furman men, four-time defending Southern Conference Champions, remain at the top of the Southeast Region poll after winning the Eye Opener and the Furman Invitational to open the 2017 season.  The Paladins return the top seven runners from last season's team, plus seniors Troy Reeder, Tanner Hinkle, and Aaron Templeton, who redshirted last year.  Senior Frank Lara, the 2016 SoCon Runner of the Year, returns after advancing to the 2016 NCAA Championships as an individual.  Lara, along with senior Josh Brickell and sophomore Ryan Adams were named to the All-Southeast Region team.

The Paladin women, who also have won four-consecutive league titles, are currently second in the Southeast Region after scoring team titles at the Eye Opener and the Furman Invitational so far in 2017.  Furman returns six of their top seven competitors from last year, plus senior Allie Buchalski, who redshirted last season.  Buchalski, who earned her second-consecutive SoCon Women's Cross Country Runner of the year award in 2015, became the program's first All-American after finishing seventh at the 2015 NCAA Championships, the highest finish ever by a Furman athlete at the national meet.  Sophomore Savannah Carnahan, the 2016 SoCon Freshman of the Year, was named to the 2016 all-region team along with sophomore Emma Grace Hurley.

"I think this may very well be the first time in school history that both team are ranked inside the top 30," said Furman head coach Robert Gary, the 2016 SoCon Coach-of-the-Year.  "We are very excited about both programs this season."

The Paladins will compete at the Louisville Invitational in Louisville, Ky., on September 30.
