GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman men's and women's cross country teams, winners of four-straight league titles, will defend their championships Saturday at the 2017 Southern Conference Championship Meet at the Milliken Research Center in Spartanburg, S.C.

The meet will mark the 88th Annual Southern Conference Cross Country Championship for the men and the 33rd for the women.  Admission is free to the public.

The championships will begin with the women's 5K run at 10 a.m., followed by the men's 8K event at 10:45 a.m. The top men's and women's teams will be honored as the 2017 conference champions, while the top seven individuals in each race will be named first team all-conference. Individual finishers placing 8th through 14th in each race will comprise the all-conference second team, and the top seven freshmen in each race will make up the league's all-freshman team.

"Both programs are very excited about the upcoming SoCon Championships," said Furman head coach Robert Gary, winner of the past four SoCon Coach of the Year awards for both the men's and women's programs.  "We are excited about where our programs are ranked nationally, but we know championship season is where the most important measurements happen.  Our very first goal of the cross country season is defending our titles Saturday."

The Paladin men's team dominated the 2016 meet, scoring 20 points for the victory and placing five runners among the top 10 in the race.  Frank Lara won the individual title and captured 2016 SoCon Runner of the Year accolades, while Ryan Adams was honored as the league's freshman of the year.  Lara, Josh Brickell, Adams, and Mason Coppi were named to the All-SoCon first team for their performances.

The Paladin women's team placed seven runners among the top 10 at last season's meet.  Furman was led to victory by Savannah Carnahan, who turned in a second-place finish and earned SoCon Freshman of the Year honors.  Carnahan was joined on the All-SoCon first team by Emma Grace Hurley, Gabrielle Jennings, and Laura Miller.
