Furman To Run In Charlotte Friday, At Pre-NCAA Meet Saturday

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman men's and women's cross country teams will compete at the Royals Challenge, hosted by Queens University at McAlpine Greek Park in Charlotte, N.C. on Friday, and at the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals meet on Saturday at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course in Madison, Wis.

Friday's meet will begin with a women's 5K run at 4:30 p.m. followed by a men's 8K race at 5 p.m.  The Paladin lineup includes Allen Clark, Madison Daniel, Luke Meade, and Thomas Moore on the men's side, and Leah Roter, Kathleen Simms, Annika Sleenhof, Jennifer Stephenson, and Sammy Trone in the women's race.

On Saturday, the 12th-ranked Furman women will compete in the White race, which beings at 10:45 a.m. CT.  The Paladins will race against Air Force, Arizona State, Arkansas State, Cal Poly, Central Michigan, Clemson, Colorado State, Eastern Michigan, No. 28 Georgia, Harvard, Idaho State, Indiana State, Kansas, Lamar, Louisville, tenth-ranked Michigan, Nebraska, No. 3 New Mexico, No. 22 Notre Dame, Purdue, San Francisco, SE Missouri State, South Dakota State, Southern Utah, fifth-ranked Stanford, Southern Cal, No. 20 Utah State, UT-Martin, Wake Forest, 16th-ranked Washington, Washington State, Weber State, William and Mary, No. 8 Wisconsin, and 24th-ranked Yale. 

The Paladin men, running in the Cardinal race at 11:30 a.m. CT, will face Arizona State, Belmont, Cal Poly, California, Campbell, Central Michigan, 11th-ranked Colorado, No. 9 Colorado State, Dayton, Duke, Georgia, Gonzaga, Hofstra, Idaho State, Iowa, Kansas, Lamar, No. 20 Michigan, 26th-ranked N.C. State, top-rated Northern Arizona, No. 22 Ole Miss, No. 13 Oregon, Richmond, SE Missouri State, South Dakota State, 15th-ranked Southern Utah, No. 5 Stanford, UMass Lowell, Utah State, Utah Valley, William and Mary, No. 3 Wisconsin, Wyoming, Yale, and Youngstown State.

The Furman women, who placed second at last year's Southeast Region Championships, are five-time defending Southern Conference Champions and return seven of their top eight competitors from last year, including junior Savannah Carnahan, the 2016 SoCon Freshman of the Year, who claimed a spot on the All-SoCon first team after placing third at the league meet last year.  

Carnahan is joined by All-SoCon first team selections Gabbi Jennings and Grace Dwyer, plus juniors Emma Grace Hurley and Riley Burr who earned All-SoCon second team accolades after recording top-10 finishes at the championships last season.  Sophomore Krissy Gear, the 2017 SoCon Freshman of the Year, and junior Jennifer Stephenson, complete the Paladin slate of returnees. 

The Furman women's lineup for Saturday's race includes Carnahan, Gear, Hurley, and Jennings, plus Reilly Caldwell, Emma Kuntz and Emily Lane.

The Furman men's team is also the five-time defending league champion and won the Southeast Region Championship in 2017. Senior Aaron Templeton, the 2017 SoCon Runner of the Year, returns to lead Furman after winning the SoCon individual title last season.  Sophomore Daniel Bernal, the 2017 SoCon Freshman of the Year, also returns in 2018, along with 2017 All-SoCon selections Mason Coppi, Ryan Adams, and Jake Ogden.  Freshman Cameron Ponder joined the team after posting the nation's top mile time among his graduating class.

Templeton, Adams, Ponder, Ogden, Coppi, and Bernal, along with Trenton Mandato will represent the Paladin men at the Pre-NCAA Invitational.
