Furman's Templeton Takes Fourth, Carnahan Seventh At Pre-NCAA Invitational

MADISON, Wis. -- Senior Aaron Templeton turned in a time of 23:50.99 to capture fourth place and pace the Furman men's cross country team, while junior Savannah Carnahan placed seventh with a time of 20:14.1 to lead the 12th-ranked Furman women Saturday at the Pre-NCAA Invitational on the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course in Madison, Wis.

The Paladin women took seventh place with 220 points in the White Division on the 6K course, which is the site of this year's NCAA Championships.  Third-ranked New Mexico won the meet with 67 points, followed by tenth-ranked Michigan in second with 120 points, and No. 5 Stanford in third at 129.

Junior Gabbi Jennings finished 28th with a time of 20:53.6, while junior Emma Grace Hurley posted a time of 21:00.6 for 36th place.  Sophomore Emma Kuntz placed 68th at 21:28.7, and sophomore Reilly Caldwell completed the Paladin slate of scorers in 81st place with a time of 21:37.4.  Sophomore Emily Lane was 93rd at 21:44.2, and sophomore Krissy Gear placed 116th with a time of 21:58.3 

On the men's side, Furman placed eighth with a score of 231 points in the Cardinal 8K event.  Top-ranked Northern Arizona claimed the title with 41 points, followed by fifth-ranked Stanford in second with 84 points.  No. 9 Colorado placed third with 110 points.

Senior Ryan Adams recorded a time of 24:31.02 for 34th place, and sophomore Daniel Bernal placed 56th at 24:39.46.  Junior Jake Ogden scored a 70th place finish at 24:48.84, followed by junior Mason Coppi in 71st with a time of 24:48.93, completing the five Furman scorers.  Freshman Cameron Ponder posted a time of 25:16.22 for 122nd place, and sophomore Trenton Mandato was 150th at 25:34.31.

"Both programs really showed up today," said Furman head coach Robert Gary.  "Our staff is very proud of the way the program builds throughout the season.  Championship season is now on the horizon, and everyone is focused toward continuing that upward trajectory of focus."

Select members of the Paladin team competed at the ninth annual Royals Cross Country Challenge Friday at McAlpine Creek Park in Charlotte, N.C.  Junior Luke Meade led Furman with a ninth-place finish after crossing  the line in 24:15 in the men's 8K, while junior Jennifer Stephenson paced the women at 17:48 to take 16th place in the 5K race.

The Paladins will compete at the Southern Conference Championships on October 27 in Cullowhee, N.C.
