Paladin Women Notch Record-Setting Day At SoCon Championships

LEXINGTON, VA. -- The Furman women set two meet records and established one new program mark  en route to two titles, the distance medley relay and the 3,000m, Saturday in the opening day of competition at the 2019 Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship, which is being held this weekend at the Corps Physical Training Facility in Lexington, Va.

Junior Savannah Carnahan paced the Paladins in the 3,000m, winning the event with a time of 9:11.04 and shattering the previous record of 9:27.51, set by Furman's Sinead Haughey in 2015.  Wofford's Hannah Steelman, who entered the race leading the league in the event, pulled out to an early lead, with Paladin junior Emma Grace Hurley in second.  Carnahan passed Hurley with six laps to go, but Steelman maintained the lead by just 34 hundredths of a second heading into the final lap.  Carnahan posted a blistering 32.52 split to overtake Steelman in the final lap, taking the title by 12 hundredths of a second.

The Paladins placed six runners among the top nine in the event, including Hurley, who finished third with a time of 9:29.40, and junior Grace Dwyer, who took fifth place at 9:59.50.  Sophomore Emily Lane tallied a sixth-place finish (10:02.03), while junior Jennifer Stephenson was eighth (10:14.93), followed by sophomore Reilly Caldwell in ninth (10:16.64).

The Paladin women's distance medley relay team of sophomores Krissy Gear, Carlan Baran, Emma Kuntz, and junior Gabbi Jennings posted a time of 11:39.35 to capture Furman's third-consecutive win in the event, establishing a new meet record and breaking the former Furman record of 11:52.94, set by the Paladins at the SoCon Championships last season.

The Paladin men placed four runners among the top five in Saturday's 3,000m final.  Junior Mason Coppi led the Paladin contingent in second place at 8:29.79, followed by junior Luke Meade in third place with a time of 8:30.26.  Senior Frank Lara took fourth place at 8:31.20, and sophomore Daniel Bernal was fifth with a time of 8:33.23.

The men's distance medley relay team of senior Ryan Adams, junior Thomas Moore, junior Madison Daniel, and rookie Cameron Ponder finished second with a time of 10:07.11.

The Paladin women had two runners advance in the 800m and three in the mile.  Gear led all runners with a time of 2:14.87 in the 800m, while Kuntz was second at 2:15.29.  Jennings paced the Paladins with a second-place time of 4:57.03 in the mile, while Gear qualified seventh at 5:04.85, and Kuntz eighth at 5:05.46.

On the men's side, Adams posted a time of 1:55.43 for third place to advance in the 800m qualifying.

In the field events, rookie Annika Sleenhof earned a spot on the SoCon All-Freshman team with a mark of 16-8.75 in the shot put.

After the first day of competition, Samford leads the women's meet, while Western Carolina is atop the men's leader board.  In the women's competition, Samford has 60 points, while Furman is in third place with 34 points.  Western Carolina has 50.5 points to lead the men's race, while Furman has 31 points for third place.
