GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Grant Schuermann pitched seven strong innings and Ben Anderson drove in four runs to power Furman past Central Connecticut State, 9-1, in Sunday afternoon baseball at Latham Stadium.
The win gave Furman (6-5) the series victory, two games to one, heading into a pair of mid-week home games against the University of Pennsylvania, beginning with a Tuesday 4:00 p.m. contest followed by a Wednesday 2:00 p.m. clash.
Schuermann (2-1), a redshirt junior left-hander who earned the first save of his career in Tuesday's 6-4 Furman victory over South Carolina, delivered an impressive start in picking up the win, allowing only one run on five hits over seven innings. The Cincinnati, Ohio, product, walked one, struck out six, and picked off a pair of Blue Devil base runners before departing with an 8-1 lead.
It was a 1-1 game until the fifth when Anderson, a freshman center fielder, singled through the right side to drive home Bret Huebner, who had doubled with one out, to give Schuermann and the Paladins a 2-1 lead.
An inning later Furman broke it open, scoring six times on five hits, with Anderson's three-run double to right center field providing the big blow. The LaGrange, Ga., native finished the game going 2-for-5 with four RBI and a run to raise his season average to .357.
The Paladins got their final run on a Bret Huebner solo home run to center field in the eighth.
Furman banged out 11 hits in the contest, with Logan Taplett, Jason Costa, and Huebner joining Anderson in registering two-hit performances. Taplett tripled to center field in the second and scored on a Huebner grounder to tie the game at 1-1.
The six-run sixth came at the expense of Blue Devils reliever Tom Curtin, who allowed all six runs in just a inning of work. CCSU starter Brett Susi (0-2) took the loss after working five innings and surrendering four hits and a pair of runs. He walked three and struck out one.
Tyler Kimbrell tossed two innings of shutout relief of Schuermann.
CCSU (2-4) finished with six hits in the contest.
