Furman's Anderson Named First Team All-Southern Conference

Ben Anderson named All-SoCon

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman freshman center fielder Ben Anderson has been named first team All-Southern Conference in voting by league head coaches, it has been announced.

Anderson, who was also selected to the media second team and to the SoCon Coaches All-Freshman Team, was among only four league freshmen to garner all-conference recognition, which includes 24 players comprising the first and second teams.

The 5-foot-10, 165-pound LaGrange, Ga., product is the first Paladin freshman to land first team All-SoCon honors since second baseman Bob Roma made the squad in 1979.

He earned starts in all 50 regular season games and hit .376 with three home runs and drove in 39 runs.  In addition to leading the Paladins in batting average and RBI, he also paced the squad in runs (46), hits (73), triples (7), total bases (107), slugging percentage (.552), on-base percentage (.477), and multi-hit games (22), and has reached base in a team-best 32 consecutive games.

Anderson established a new school season triples standard with his seventh three-bag hit, which drove in a pair of runs, in Furman's last game — a 9-4 win over East Tennessee State on May 13.  He ranks fourth nationally in the category.

Despite four game rainouts over the last week, Anderson's 73 hits is just five shy of cracking Furman's season Top 10.  His .376 batting average is the highest by a Paladin freshman since Reese Wade hit .401 in 2008.

Furman (24-26, 9-12 SoCon), which finished seventh in the SoCon regular season, will face second place finisher Samford (32-24, 16-8 SoCon) in Southern Conference Tournament first round action on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. at Fluor Field in downtown Greenville.
