CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Chaz Davey's two-out RBI single in the eighth inning drove home Luke Manzo from second base to lift the College of Charleston to a 2-1 victory over Furman in baseball action Saturday afternoon at the Ballpark at Patriots Point.

Davey's game deciding hit came after Manzo drew a leadoff walk from Paladin reliever Eric Taylor and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt.  After a fly out, Davey lined the first pitch he saw from Taylor back thru the middle to plate Manzo.

College of Charleston closer Nathan Ocker retired the Paladins in order in the ninth to secure the victory for the Cougars and notch his fourth save.

The loss was charged to Taylor (0-1), who allowed a run on two hits in two innings of work.

Taylor took over for freshman Rob Hughes, who delivered a strong outing in his collegiate debut.  The Paladin right-hander surrendered a first inning run but kept the Cougars scoreless over the next five frames.  He surrendered five hits, struck out three, and did not walk a batter in throwing 79 pitches.

Furman couldn't capitalize on a potential big first inning after Jabari Richards drew a one-out walk, Anthony Fontana singled, and John Michael Boswell doubled off the wall in left field to score Richards.  Fontana was tagged out between third base and home on Logan Taplett's fielder's choice ground ball and, after a walk loaded the bases, Bret Huebner fouled out to third base to end the threat.

The College of Charleston (12-6) tied the game in their first turn at the plate, getting an RBI ground out off Davey's bat that scored Dupree Hart.

Cougars starting pitcher Blake Robinson settled down at the first inning to go five frames, allowing the one run on three hits and two walk while striking out five.

Furman (5-11) got a pair of one-out singles in the sixth against CofC reliever Josh Price but couldn't convert as Sterling Turmon struck out and Bret Huebner grounded out to the pitcher.

Price (4-1) picked up the win after tossing three innings of three-hit, shutout ball.  He fanned three.

Boswell and Fontana had two hits apiece to lead Furman's six-hit effort.

The College of Charleston had seven hits.

Sunday's series finale starts at 1:00 p.m.
