Greenville, S.C. – The Furman men's basketball team will open play in the 2013 Southern Conference Men's Basketball Championship with a 2 p.m. contest versus No. 5 seed Samford on Friday at the U.S. Cellular Center in Asheville, N.C.
The Paladins are the No. 12 seed in the tournament after losing their final 10 regular season games to finish at 6-23 overall and 3-15 in league play.
Friday's tournament opener will mark the third straight year and fourth time in the last five years that Furman has drawn Samford in the opening round of the event. The Paladins claimed a 75-66 win over Samford in last year's first round after topping the Bulldogs 61-48 in the 2010-11 tournament opener in Chattanooga, Tenn. Furman dropped a 57-52 decision against Samford in the first round of the 2008-09 tournament.
The winner of Friday's game will advance to face fourth-seeded Appalachian State at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 9.
