Greenville, S.C. – The Furman men's basketball team concludes its non-conference schedule when it travels to California to face the Pac-12's Cal Golden Bears on December 28, and the Big West Conference's UC Davis Aggies on December 30.
The Paladins open the west coast swing on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. PT/6:00 p.m. ET versus the Mike Montgomery-coached Golden Bears at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, Calif., in a game that will be televised live on the Pac-12 Network.
Saturday's game marks the second all-time meeting between the Paladins and Golden Bears. Cal claimed an 84-50 triumph in the only previous meeting between the schools on December 19, 2006, at Haas Pavilion. Furman also traveled to Cal during the 2009-10 campaign when the Paladins dropped a 72-60 decision versus UC Santa Barbara before toppling Utah Valley, 77-69 at the Golden Bear Classic.
Cal enters the matchup at 8-4 following a 68-54 loss at Creighton last weekend in Omaha, Neb. Justin Cobbs has led five Bears averaging in double figures scoring 13.8 points per game. Call has limited the opposition to 40.6% shooting from the field and less than 68 points per game.
Furman improved to 5-6 on the season with an 86-83 victory over the Liberty Flames in its last contest on December 20. Sophomore Stephen Croone, who leads the Paladins averaging 21.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.2 steals per game, propelled Furman to the win with career highs of 40 points and 11 rebounds against the Flames. His 40-point performance marked the first for a Paladin since Roy Simpson tallied 45 points versus East Carolina on February 5, 1972.
Both games can be heard live on WGOG FM 96.3, Fox Sports 1440 AM and through StretchAudio at www.FurmanPaladins.com. Fans can access live in-game updates on Twitter by following @FurmanHoops.
