No. 19 UConn Downs Furman Basketball, 83-58

Storrs, Conn. -- The 19th-ranked UConn Huskies built a 20-point halftime lead en route to claiming an 83-58 victory over Furman in non-conference men's basketball action as part of the Battle 4 Atlantis on Saturday afternoon at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, Conn.

Shonn Miller paced the Huskies with 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting and Jalen Adams and Rodney Purvis added 14 and 13 points, respectively, to help UConn improve to 3-0 on the season.  The loss dropped Furman to 2-2.

The Huskies held Furman without a basket for over six minutes to open the game as they raced out to a 12-1 lead before taking a 39-19 advantage into the break. Furman, just 20% from the floor over the opening 20 minutes, responded early in the second half with an 8-2 run to trim a 22-point margin down to 16 at 43-27 on Larry Wideman's slam with 16:01 to play.

UConn pushed the lead back above 20, but the Paladins answered with a 9-3 spurt that Matt Rafferty capped with a tip-in at the 11:53 mark to cut the Huskies' advantage to 51-36.  Furman still trailed by just 15 at 60-45 with 8:14 to play when Miller scored seven points to key a 13-3 run to help the Huskies put the game away.

Rafferty scored 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting and added nine rebounds to lead Furman, while sophomore Geoff Beans hit 4-of-9 three-point attempts to tally 14 points.

UConn shot 46.4% from the field and outscored the Paladins 36-16 in the paint. Furman connected on 34.5% of its shots, including 10-of-36 from behind the arc.

The Paladins return to action on Thursday, November 26, when they face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as part of the Battle 4 Atlantis at Elon University.
