2016 Furman Men's Basketball Preseason Outlook

Nov 3, 2016

The Paladins, who face Bob Jones in an exhibition contest on November 4, at Timmons Arena before visiting Clinton, S.C., to take on Presbyterian in the regular season opener on November 11, will take to the court at 3 p.m. on Monday. "It's always an exciting time when you get practice started," said Medved, who is entering his fourth year at the helm of the Furman program. "We feel good about our group of guys and the work they have put in this offseason. I know they can't wait to get going." The Paladins return four starters from a 2015-16 squad that posted a 19-16 record, finished third in the Southern Conference with an 11-7 league mark and claimed its first postseason victory in 40 years by downing ULM in the opening round of the CollegeInsider.Com Tournament last March. "We have a group of upperclassmen who have played in a lot of games and have showed great leadership to the younger guys," said Medved. "These guys know how tough our league is going to be this season and realize we have to make the most of all these days." Leading Furman's list of returning starters is 6-foot-2 guard Devin Sibley. The junior from Knoxville, Tenn., averaged over 12 points per game as a sophomore and poured in 29 points in Furman's loss to ETSU in the SoCon Tournament semifinals. Helping Sibley around the perimeter will be junior Daniel Fowler, who contributed 6.2 points and 3.8 rebounds per game as a starter last season and recorded the game-winning put back to lift Furman over the Warhawks in the CIT opening round. Junior John Davis III, who made 19 starts last season, also returns to the Paladin backcourt. The frontcourt features the return of Iceland international Kris Acox and 2016 SoCon All-Freshman choice Matt Rafferty. Acox, who led Iceland to next summer's EuroBasket Finals with a 4-2 record in qualifying this past month, averaged 8.9 points and 5.8 rebounds per game while patrolling the low block for the Paladins last season. Rafferty, a 6-foot-8 product of Hinsdale, Ill., produced a breakout rookie season, averaging 8.0 points and a team-best 6.7 rebounds per game while earning 30 starts.
