Greenville, S.C. -- UNCG jumped out to an 8-0 lead and led wire-to-wire in an 80-67 victory over Furman in Southern Conference men's basketball action Wednesday evening at Timmons Arena.
Marvin Smith scored 18 points to lead five Spartans in double figures, while forward James Dickey posted a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds to help UNCG to a commanding 38-17 edge on the glass.
UNCG (18-6, 9-2 SoCon) built a 21-7 lead in the opening eight minutes of the game before Furman used a 22-10 run to trim the deficit back to two points at 31-29 on Matt Rafferty's layup with 3:23 left in the first period. The Spartans carried a 36-31 lead into the halftime break and opened the second half on a 6-0 spurt to push their advantage back to double figures. Furman cut the margin back to six points on two occasions, but UNCG answered the second run with a 10-2 run of its own to restore the double digit lead that it held the rest of the way.
The Spartans shot 64% in the second half to finish at 53.6% for the game and converted on 12-of-14 trips to the foul line. UNCG turned 12 offensive rebounds into a 12-0 edge in second chance points and tallied 15 points off of just 10 Furman turnovers. Francis Alonso and Demetrius Troy scored 12 points apiece and Jordy Kuiper added 10 to join Smith and Dickey in double figures.
Furman (16-9, 7-5 SoCon) shot 50% from the field, but made only 8-of-24 three-point attempts and 9-of-15 tries at the foul line. Junior Andrew Brown returned from injury to lead the Paladins with 15 points and three steals, while Daniel Fowler added 12 points and three assists.
