Paladins Cruise Past Bob Jones In Season Opener, 102-48

Greenville, S.C. -- Senior Matt Rafferty and junior Jordan Lyons scored career highs with 24 and 23 points, respectively, to pace Furman to a 102-48 victory over the Bob Jones Bruins in the Paladins' season opener Tuesday night at Timmons Arena.

Rafferty, a preseason All-Southern Conference choice, connected on 9-of-11 shots from the floor while adding eight rebounds and five assists. Lyons drained a career-best seven three-pointers on 13 attempts and also contributed three assists.

Leading 18-14 with under 11 minutes to play in the first half, Furman (1-0) came out of the media timeout and fashioned a 14-0 run to blow the game open. Lyons drained a pair of triples during the run and Clay Mounce poured in five points before Jaylon Pugh connected from three-point range to open up a 32-14 Paladin lead with 8:03 to play in the half.

Furman outscored Bob Jones 51-19 over the final 20 minutes by holding the Bruins to just 28% shooting. The Paladins committed a school-record low three turnovers while forcing 21 BJU miscues and outscoring the Bruins 29-0 on points off turnovers and 16-0 on fastbreak points.

Mounce connected on all five of his field goal attempts to join Rafferty and Lyons in double figures with 12 points. He also pulled down seven rebounds. Freshman Mike Bothwell contributed 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting, while sophomore Tre Clark finished with nine points and seven rebounds.

The Paladins shot 55.9% from the field and managed a 37-24 rebounding margin. Bob Jones (0-2) hit just 42.6% of its shots, including going 3-for-11 from long range.

Jayson Barnhart scored 13 points to lead three Bruins in double figures.

The Paladins are back in action on Friday at 8 p.m. EST when they travel to Chicago, Ill., to face the Loyola Ramblers, a 2018 NCAA Final Four participant, at Gentile Arena. The game will be streamed on ESPN3 and will air on live on NBC Sports Chicago.
