Greenville, S.C. – Sports Illustrated has ranked Furman forward Matt Rafferty at No. 34 in its list of "The Top 50 Players in College Basketball This Season", it was announced this week.
A first team All-Southern Conference selection and SoCon All-Tournament choice, Rafferty has paced the Paladins by averaging 17.2 points, 9.1 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 2.5 steals and 1.1 blocks per game while shooting 61.7% from the field. The senior is the only player in NCAA Division I basketball history to produce that stat line with AP Player of the Year and NBA Hall of Famer Larry Bird coming the closest in 1978-79.
Rafferty, a native of Hinsdale, Ill., has led the nation with 8.3 total win shares and has also led the country in defensive win shares this season. His standout senior year has helped Furman to a school-record 25 wins and a No. 41 ranking in the latest NCAA Evaluation Tool (NET), which has put Furman in the discussion for an at-large bid to next week's NCAA Tournament.
With 1,313 career points, Rafferty currently ranks 23rd on Furman's career scoring list. His 843 rebounds rank eighth in school history, while his 181 career steals are good for fourth on the Paladins' career charts.
