GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman director of athletics Dr. Gary Clark announced today that the school has scheduled a pair of football games with Elon for the 2017 and '18 seasons.
Furman will entertain Elon on Sept. 9, 2017, at Paladin Stadium and will play at Elon's Rhodes Stadium on Sept. 8, 2018.
The Paladins and Phoenix were Southern Conference (SoCon) rivals for a decade prior to Elon's departure from the league to join the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), beginning July 1, 2014. Furman owns an 11-6 series lead with Elon in football, but the Phoenix won the last meeting between the two, earning a 35-28 decision last fall in Paladin Stadium.
In other football news head coach Bruce Fowler has announced that defensive back Jairus Hollman and center Eric Thoni will not return to the football program in 2014 due to violations of team and university policies.
While Hollman will not return to the university for the 2014-15 school year, Thoni will attend Furman but not participate in the football program, Fowler indicated.
Hollman, from Atlanta, Ga., lettered in his two seasons with the Paladins and earned second team All-SoCon honors in 2013 after totaling 112 tackles, including 12 for loss, and collecting three interceptions, a fumble recovery, and seven pass deflections as a nickel back and safety. He also returned 16 punts, including one for a touchdown this past season.
A product of Orlando, Fla., Thoni started in 21 games at center over the past two seasons, including 11 games during the 2013 campaign.
Furman won its record 13th SoCon championship last year, going 8-6 overall and 6-2 in league play en route to earning the league's FCS playoff bid as the automatic qualifier. The Paladins finished the season ranked 21st in the FCS Coaches Poll and 22nd in the Sports Network Poll.
