GREENVILLE, S.C -- Furman senior Logan McCarter has been named Southern Conference Special Teams Player of the Week, the league announced Monday morning.
Stepping in for injured return specialist Thomas Gordon, McCarter recorded an exceptionally rare kickoff return for a touchdown on an onside kick, covering 47 yards for the score in the Paladins' 56-35 Southern Conference victory over East Tennessee State on Saturday.
McCarter's return, which came with a little over eight minutes remaining in the contest, effectively sealed the game's outcome and capped a brilliant all-around performance by the Sevierville, Tenn, product, who as a starting wide receiver collected seven pass receptions for 178 yards (both career highs), including a 64-yard touchdown grab. The 178 receiving yards were the most by Paladin since 2010 and sixth highest single game tally in Furman history.
McCarter's productive day upped his career receptions haul to 77 and receiving yards total of 1,210 — active leaders and just outside Furman's Top 20 in both categories.
McCarter is the first Paladin to garner SoCon Player of the Week honors since Oct. 31, 2015.
Winners of its last two games, Furman plays at Chattanooga on Saturday in a 4:00 p.m. ESPN3 broadcast contest.
