GREENVILLE, S.C -- Furman football's Andy Schumpert has been named General Shale Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week, the league announced today.
Schumpert, a senior tight end, played a integral part in Furman's 56-35 Southern Conference victory over East Tennessee State on Saturday, catching four passes for 72 yards and two touchdowns covering 32 and 30 yards.
The Brentwood, Tenn., native's performance was remarkable when considering he sat out three days of practice last week due to a stomach virus and did not take part in pre-game warmups to receive two intravenous fluid injections.
A three-time SoCon Academic Honor Roll selection and recipient of the 2017 Lawrence Kessler Award for Excellence in Accounting, he sports a 3.77 cumulative grade point average and has nine catches for 192 yards and a team leading three touchdown grabs thru five games.
Winners of its last two games, Furman plays at Chattanooga on Saturday in a 4:00 p.m. ESPN3 broadcast contest.
