GREENVILLE, S.C -- Furman football offensive lineman Matthew Schmidt has been named ScanSource Student-Athlete Leader of the Month for October, it has been announced.

Schmidt, a 6-foot-3, 290-pound senior center, will be recognized at Saturday's Furman-Citadel 2:00 p.m. football game at Paladin Stadium.

The Stokesdale, N.C., product and All-Southern Conference performer helped key the Paladins to a 4-0 record in October, capped by a 28-6 win over Western Carolina that saw Schmidt help clear the way for a season-high 343-yard rushing effort.  Winners of six straight games,  Furman (6-3, 5-1 SoCon), ranked 21st in the latest STATS FCS Top 25 Poll, is in second place in the SoCon standings, a half game behind front runner Wofford.

Schmidt, a starter in all nine games this year and in 35 of the 36 games he's played during his four-year Paladin career, is Furman's most experienced offensive lineman with 2,227 play participations.

A business administration major, he was a SoCon Academic Honor Roll selection in 2014 and is a member of Furman's Fellowship of Christian Athletes leadership team.  In addition he's served as a volunteer with the Greenville Literacy Association Book Sale, the Greenville Children's Hospital, and in collecting Christmas gifts for local families.

The Furman ScanSource Student-Athlete Leader of the Month award was created to honor Furman student-athletes who excel in the classroom, on the field, and in the community.
