Furman Football Adds Seven Signees, Bringing 2019 Recruiting Class To 16

National Signing Day
National Signing Day

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman head football coach Clay Hendrix today announced the signing of seven more recruits as part of the Paladins' 2019 recruiting class.

The seven additions join the nine Furman recruits announced during the NCAA's December signing period to comprise the current 16-member class.

Wednesday's signees feature a pair of cornerbacks, as well as a safety, linebacker, offensive lineman, tailback, and wide receiver.

The two cornerbacks include all-state performers Kam Brinson (Augusta, Ga./Aquinas H.S.) and Cally Chizik (Auburn, Ala./Auburn H.S.).  Brinson compiled 1,441 all-purpose yards and a pair of interceptions en route to landing Atlanta Journal Constitution 1A All-State honors this past fall, and Chizik earned Alabama Sportswriters Association 7A All-State laurels after helping his team to a 10-2 campaign and Final 8 state playoff appearance in 2018.  He is the son of former Auburn head coach Gene Chizik.

The Paladins added safety Hugh Ryan (Irmo, S.C./Dutch Fork H.S.), a member of three 5A state championship teams at Dutch Fork and captain of South Carolina's Shrine Bowl team, which included Dec. 19 Paladin offensive lineman signee Evan Jumper.

Furman secured one of its top recruiting targets, linebacker Josh Agbenou (Bethlehem, Ga./Apalachee H.S.), from among 14 competing schools, including five FBS programs.  The Georgia Sportswriters Association 6A All-State honoree led his region with 133 tackles in 2018 and earned an invitation to the Georgia North-South All-Star Game.

Three additions on offense round out the newest crop of Paladins, including offensive guard Dan Dodd, III (Keystone Heights, Fla./Keystone Heights HS), tailback Wayne Anderson, Jr. (Prosper, Texas/Prosper HS), and wide receiver Jake Kimmelman (Greenville, S.C./Southside Christian School).

Solidified as a recruiting target in a Furman prospect camp, Dodd starred on both sides of the football, earning all-county honors three times and Gainesville Sun All-Area accolades twice. Anderson fashioned a solid career at Prosper High School, where he rushed for 1,524 yards and 18 touchdowns and tallied 25 tackles and four interceptions as a senior.  The addition of Kimmelman gives Furman six Palmetto state products in the 2019 class.  He caught 40 passes for 685 yards (17.1 ypc) in 2018 in helping Southside Christian to a 10-3 season and appearance in the 2A Upper State Championship.

Three of Furman's 2019 signees — safety Austin Jones, spur Jalen Miller, and center Evan Jumper — enrolled in January and are taking part in spring practice, which got underway Jan. 25.
