GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman men's golf team will compete in the 82nd edition of the Southern Conference Men's Golf Championship Sunday through Tuesday at Pinehurst No. 9 in Pinehurst, N.C. The Jack Nicklaus Signature course, which is serving as the site of the championships for the fifth-consecutive year, will play at par-72, 7,118 yards.
Furman's lineup for the 54-hole tournament, which tees off at 8 a.m. on Sunday, includes senior Hunter Nichols, juniors Connor Bruns, and sophomores Keller Harper, Matt Lehman, and Scott Purvis. The Paladins will tee off of No. 10 Sunday beginning at 8:45 a.m. and will play in twosomes with Western Carolina.
Harper leads the league with a 72.17 stroke average over 30 rounds this season and has four top-10 finishes in five tournaments this spring. As a team, the Paladins rank second in the league with a 293.57 stroke average.
The Paladins are looking to claim their first SoCon crown since 2010. Last year, East Tennessee State won its third-straight title and league-record 20th overall, turning in a 2-over-par 290 in the final round for a three-round total of 882, eight shots clear of runner-up UNC Greensboro. The Bucs' Geuntae Kim won a sudden-death playoff against UNCG's Jonathan Brightwell for medalist honors.
The SoCon currently has two teams ranked among the top 100 in this season's Golfstat rankings. ETSU leads the league at No. 75, while UNCG stands at No. 98. Chattanooga is just outside the top 100 at No. 103.
The team winner of the SoCon Championship will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA regional, while the individual medalist will also earn an automatic regional qualification.
