PINEHURST, N.C. -- Sophomore Keller Harper (+1) is tied for sixth to pace the Furman men's golf team following the first round of play Sunday at the SoCon Championships at Pinehurst No. 9 in Pinehurst, N.C. The Jack Nicklaus Signature course, which is serving as the site of the championships for the fifth-consecutive year, is playing at par-72, 7,118 yards.
Harper, a native of Atlanta, Ga., led three Paladins in the top 20 after firing a 73 with three birdies to finish the first round four strokes back of Samford's Harlan Winn, who led the field with a 69 on Sunday.
Junior Connor Bruns (+3) enters the second round tied for 14th after carding a 74 with three birdies on Sunday, while sophomore Matt Lehman (+4) is tied for 18th after scoring a 76 with birdies on No. 2 and No. 10.
Sophomore Scott Purvis (+5) carded a 77 with consecutive birdies on No. 1 and No. 2 in the opening round, to sit alone in 22nd place. Senior Hunter Nichols (+9) is tied for 30th after recording an 81 with a birdie on No. 10 in round one.
Chattanooga (+2) holds a two-stroke lead over East Tennessee State (+4), while UNC Greensboro (+9) is in third place. The Paladins (+13) are in fourth, followed by Samford (+15) in fifth.
The 54-hole tournament will continue on Monday, weather permitting. Teams will tee off of No. 1 and No. 10 beginning at 8 a.m. The Paladins will tee off of No. 1 starting at 8 a.m. and play in a group with UNC Greensboro.
