Second-Half Rally Falls Short as Jacksonville Downs Furman on Saturday

 

Greenville, S.C. – Despite a school-record seven goals from William Holcomb, Furman's second-half rally fell shot as the Paladins dropped Saturday's contest to Jacksonville, 12-11. The win moves the Dolphins to 6-6 on the season and 4-2 in SoCon play, while the loss drops the Paladins to 3-9 and 3-3 in SoCon play.

Holcomb set a school record with seven goals and added two assists for a school record nine points. Jonah Moore added a goal and a team-high three assists in his final game inside Paladin Stadium, while Lou Yovino added a goal and an assist. Alec Van de Bovenkamp tallied 12 saves in goal and a team-high four ground balls. 

Jacksonville jumped out to an early lead on the opening faceoff before the Paladins took a 2-1 lead on back-to-back goals by Lou Yovnio and David Williamson to end the first quarter. The Dolphins went on a 5-1 run in the second quarter to take a 6-3 lead into halftime.

Holcomb cut the JU lead to two at 6-4 with 10:40 to go in the third, before the Dolphins used back-to-back goals to push the lead to 8-4. Holcomb scored to cut the lead to three with 5:00 to go on the third, before the Dolphins again used back-to-back goals to take a 10-5 lead with 1:47 remaining. Holcomb then netted his fourth goal of the day to cut the lead to 10-6 at the end of the third.

The Paladins used a man-up goal to cut the lead to 10-7 to open the fourth, before Jacksonville pushed the lead back to four at 11-7 with 14:38 to go. William Holcomb then scored three-straight goals to cut the lead to one at 11-10, but Jacksonville put the game out of reach with a goal with 53 seconds to go. Jonah Moore cut the lead to one at 12-11 with 28 seconds to go, but the Paladins never had another opportunity to tie the game, as the Dolphins held on for the victory.

Eric Applegate led Jacksonville with three goals, while three other Dolphins each added two.

The Paladins are back in action on Saturday, April 28, closing out the 2018 regular season at Bellarmine.
