Williamson’s Late Score Lifts Furman Over Bellarmine, Into SoCon Tournament

Louisville, Ky. – After allowing a Bellarmine fourth-quarter rally to tie the game, David Williamson netted his fourth goal of the day with three seconds remaining to give Furman the 8-7 victory on Saturday afternoon. The win, coupled with an Air Force loss, clinched the #4 seed for Furman in next week's SoCon Tournament and moves the Paladins to 4-9, 4-3 in SoCon play, while the loss ends the Knights' season at 4-9, 2-5 SoCon.

Williamson led the Paladins with a game-high four points, while reigning SoCon Offensive Player of the Week William Holcomb added two goals and two assists. Freshman Cole Horan picked up a team-high four ground balls and Alec Van de Bovenkamp earned 15 saves on the day in goal.

Bellarmine opened an early 1-0 lead in the game's first minute, before the Paladins used back-to-back goals by Holcom and Williamson to take a 2-2 lead with 6:03 to go in the first. The Knights tied the game with just under 5:00 left, before Furman used back-to-back goals from Williamson and Jarrett Birch to take a 4-2 lead after the first period.

The Knights cut the lead to one with 12:34 to go in the first half, but the Paladins again responded with back-to-back goals, this time both on man-up opportunities, to take a 6-3 lead into halftime. Holcomb added his second goal of the day for the game's only third quarter goal, giving the Paladins the 7-3 lead heading into the final 15:00.

Bellarmine mounted a furious fourth-quarter rally, scoring three-straigh goals to cut the lead to one with just under 5:00 to go. The teams traded defensive possessions until Morgan Macko tied the game for Bellarmine at seven goals each with 34 seconds to go in the game. David Williamson put the goal in the back of the net with three seconds remaining to hold off the Knights' comeback and give Furman the 8-7 win.

Bellarmine was led by Macko and Stephen Votto with two goals each, while Josh When added two assists.

Furman returns to action on Thursday, May 3, taking on top-seeded Richmond at 5:30 p.m. in the SoCon Tournament Semifinals, to be streamed live on the SoCon Digital Network.
