Richmond, Va. – Behind a seven-goal fourth quarter, Richmond downed Furman, 16-8, in the first round of the 2018 SoCon Championship inside Robbins Stadium on Richmond's campus. The win moves the Spiders into the SoCon Championship game on Saturday, while the loss ends the Paladins' season at 4-10.
Furman was led by William Holcomb with three goals on the day, while Jonah Moore added two. Lou Yovino tallied a goal and an assist and keeper Alec Van de Bovenkamp made nine saves and allowed 16 goals in 56:21.
After Furman had pulled to within one at 8-7 on a pair of William Holcomb goals in the third quarter, Richmond's Mitch Savoca scored the second of his two goals on the day with just 0.9 seconds left in the frame to send the home team into the fourth with a two-goal advantage.
The goal was Richmond's first of the second half and seemed to open the floodgates, as the Spiders would net four more in rapid succession, getting scoring strikes from Hatfield, Austin Brown, Ryan Lee and Mitch Goldberg in the first 2:28 of the fourth quarter to give the Spiders their largest lead of the game to that point at 13-7.
A Jonah Moore goal with 9:44 left got Furman back in the scoring column, but Richmond scored the final three, including a pair from Ryan Lanchbury to complete his hat trick and give the Spiders the 16-8 victory.
Richmond will try Saturday for its first SoCon Championship title, as the Spiders have finished as runners-up in each of the previous three years of the tournament's existence.
