Furman Downed by Lightning, Knights in Saturday SoCon Contest

 

Greenville, S.C. – Leading 9-4 at halftime, a 1:30 lightning delay quelled Furman's momentum and jumpstarted Bellarmine, as the Knights used an 11-3 second-half scoring run to down the Paladins, 15-12, in SoCon play on Saturday afternoon. The win moves Bellarmine to 3-8 on the year, 3-2 in SoCon play, while the loss drops the Paladins to 2-9, 1-4 in SoCon play.

Jarrett Birch led the Paladins with five goals on the day, while Carson Sorrells added three and William Holcomb added two. Alec Van de Bovenkamp made 10 saves on the day, while Corey Hall picked up a team0high six groundballs and caused three turnovers.

The Paladins jumped out to a 4-0 lead to open the game, thanks to back-to-back goals by Carson Sorrells and goals by William Holcomb and Jarrett Birch. The Knights responded with back-to-back scores to cut the lead to 4-2 with just under 6:00 to go in the first, before both teams were held off the board for the remainder of the first period.

The Knights cut the lead to one at 4-3 with 13:07 to go in the second, before Furman responded with four-straight goals to push the lead to 8-3 with 7:53 to go. Bellarmine cut the lead in half with 7:00 remaining, but Jarrett Birch picked up his fourth goal of the day with 2:16 before halftime to give the Paladins a 9-4 lead heading into halftime.

After a 1:30 lightning delay, Furman pushed the lead to 10-4 to open the second half, but Bellarmine responded with a 5-1 scoring run to cut the lead to two at 11-9 heading into the game's final 15:00. The Knights continued to pour on the scoring, using three-straight scores to open the fourth and grab their first lead of the game at 12-11 with 9:24 to go. The Paladins evened the score at 12 with 8:23 to go, but the Knights used three-straight scores to down the Paladins, 15-12.

Furman is back in action on Saturday, April 20, traveling to Jacksonville for a 12:00 p.m. SoCon matchup.
