Greenville, S.C. -- Redshirt-freshman Ben Hale recorded three saves and No. 25 Furman notched its sixth clean sheet of the season as the Paladins played to a 0-0 draw with Southern Conference rival Mercer Tuesday evening on Seagraves Field at Stone Soccer Stadium.

Hale, a native of Frisco, Texas, made three stops in the first half and the defense held Mercer at bay the rest of the way as Furman moved to 7-3-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the SoCon. Mercer moved to 4-4-3 overall and 2-0-1 in SoCon play by recording its first clean sheet of the campaign.

The Paladins threatened several times in the early going as Mercer goalkeeper Jeremy Booth was forced to stretch to deny a Cole McLagan header in the 22nd minute before a Bear defender headed Kevin Edelmann's header off of the line in the 26th minute. McLagan's shot just over eight minutes into the second half was the only chance on goal for either team in the second half.

In overtime, Danny Kierath tested Booth with a shot from the left side of the box in the opening 20 seconds and the Paladins nearly scored off of a corner kick before Booth smothered a loose ball in the box with only a few seconds remaining. Neither team managed a shot over the final 10-minute period.

Furman finished with a 9-8 advantage in total shots and 4-3 edge in shots on goal. Booth matched Hale with three saves on the night to register a shutout for Mercer.

The Paladins return to action on Friday at 8 p.m. when they travel to Johnson City, Tenn., to face ETSU. Furman hosts Wofford next Tuesday, October 10, for the Quinn Game.
