Greensboro, N.C. -- Manny Apau scored a shorthanded goal with less than three minutes remaining in regulation to lift UNCG to a 1-0 victory over Furman in the Southern Conference men's soccer regular season finale for both schools Saturday night at UNCG Stadium.

The loss dropped Furman (10-6-1, 4-2 SoCon) into third place and the No. 3 seed Paladins will host the winner of Wednesday's VMI-Belmont title in a SoCon Tournament second round contest at 7 p.m. on Saturday at Stone Stadium.

After UNCG produced the majority of the chances through the first hour of play, the Spartans were reduced to 10 men at the 63:50 mark when Moises Gonzalez was sent off. Furman began to gain its share of possession, but the Paladins fashioned just one shot on goal before Apau found space on the right side of the box and placed a shot into the left-hand corner at 87:05.

Josiah Baker forced a late save, but Ricky Zarri and Jon Milligan combined to stop three shots in the shutout for the Spartans. Furman's Ben Hale kept Furman in the game with three saves, including a pair of lunging stops in the first half.

UNCG managed a 12-6 edge in shots and 4-3 advantage in shots on goal.
