    Former Furman men’s tennis coach Paul Scarpa was among a class of six tennis icons inducted into the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Men’s Collegiate Hall of Fame this week. The ceremony was held in conjunction with the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships at the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga. Scarpa joined former collegiate coaches Chuck Kriese and Ron Smarr, along with players Patrick Du Pré and David Wheaton, plus ITA contributor Jon Vegosen in the 2012 class of inductees.

With the win, the Paladins advance to Saturday’s semifinals, where they will take on the College of Charleston at 8:30 a.m.

    Furman junior Andrew Mellow was named to the All-Southern Conference men’s tennis first team, as announced by the league office today. Postseason balloting was conducted by the league’s head coaches, who were not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes.

    Tom Wood defeated junior Tyler Droll, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6(8-6) at number six singles to break a 3-3 tie and lead the Wofford men’s tennis team to a 4-3 win over Furman Saturday at the Mickel Tennis Center in the regular season finale for both teams. The Paladins honored senior Watson George in his final home match on Saturday.

    The Furman men’s tennis team will conclude the 2012 regular season Saturday when the Paladins take on Wofford at 1 p.m. at the Mickel Tennis Center. The team will honor senior Watson George in his final home match of the season. The match the 32nd meeting between the two schools. The Paladins defeated the Terriers, 4-3, last season to take a 30-1 lead in the series.
  • Furman Match At Appalachian State Ruled 3-3 Tie

    Following a protest by Furman head men's tennis coach Kelly Jones, the Paladins' match at Appalachian State on Thursday was officially declared a 3-3 tie. Jones protested the Mountaineers' singles line-up for the match, and a Southern Conference committee voted unanimously (4-0) to render the number six singles match a no contest, thus rendering the tie.

The Paladins defeated the Bulldogs, 7-0, during the 2011 regular season last year, then handed The Citadel a 4-1 loss to open the SoCon Tournament, to take a 44-2 lead in the series.
