GREENVILLE, S.C. – Furman junior Andrew Mellow was named to the All-Southern Conference men's tennis first team, as announced by the league office today. Postseason balloting was conducted by the league's head coaches, who were not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes.
Mellow, a native of St. Louis, Mo., posted a 12-10 overall singles record and 6-4 league mark, playing in the number one spot for the Paladins this season. In doubles, he teamed with rookie Jacob Behal early in the season, then combined with fellow junior Tyler Droll for the last half of the season for a 7-3 SoCon doubles record, competing mostly in the No. 2 doubles position.
The College of Charleston and The Citadel will serve as hosts of the 2011 Southern Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Championships this week (April 19-22) in Charleston S.C.. The four-day event features all 22 men's and women's teams from the Southern Conference.
Saturday's semifinals and Sunday's championship matches will take place at the College of Charleston's Tennis Center on Patriots Point. Thursday's opening round and Friday's quarterfinals will be split between the CofC Tennis Center and The Citadel's O. Perry Earle, Jr. Tennis Center.
College of Charleston and Samford shared the men's regular season championship with identical 9-1 marks in league play. The Cougars earned the top seed in the tournament by virtue of their head-to-head win over the Bulldogs. Appalachian State captured the third seed. UNCG and Furman (8-14-1, 5-4-1 SoCon) earned the fourth and fifth seeds, respectively, and will square off in a quarterfinal match-up at 10:30 a.m. Friday.
Chattanooga, the eighth seed, takes on No. 9 Davidson Thursday morning at 9:00 a.m. to open the tournament. That match is followed by Wofford (No. 7) squaring off against Georgia Southern (No. 10). The final opening round match pits Elon (No. 6) against The Citadel (No. 11).
The men's championship match will be held Sunday at 10 a.m.
