Furman Opens 2012 Fall Season At Southern Intercollegiate; Mellow Ranked 78th In Preseason Rankings
ATHENS, GA. -- The Furman men's tennis team opened the 2012 fall season at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships last weekend at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
Paladin senior Andrew Mellow, who ranks 78th nationally according to the Campbell/ITA Division I Preseason Rankings released this weekend, entered the weekend as the tournament's 13th-seeded player. Mellow dropped a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 match to Siim Tuus of Liberty in the opening round, then defeated Pedro Dumont of Mississippi State, 6-2, 6-2, in the first round of consolation matches. Georgia's Garrett Brasseaux handed Mellow a 6-2, 6-2 loss in the second consolation round.
Furman freshman Matt Browne defeated Stuart Tierney of Lipscomb, 6-3, 6-3, in the first round of the Division II singles bracket then fell to Georgia Tech's Vikram Hundal, 6-6, 6-3 in the second round. Paladin sophomore Richard Cassagrande dropped a 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 match to North Florida's Leonardo Nahar in the first round of Division II singles, and Shea Thomas of Liberty posted a 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 win over Paladin junior Alex Christ in the same round. Christ rebounded to defeat Fernando Amon of East Tennessee State, 6-3, 4-6, (10-5) in the first round of consolation.
In doubles action, Cassagrande and Christ teamed up for an 8-4 opening-round victory over Bernardo Craveiro and Timo Kranz of North Florida in the Division II doubles bracket. The Paladins fell to Georgia Tech's Garrett Gordon and Hundal, 8-4, in the second round. Brasseaux and Eric Diaz of Georgia defeated Browne and Mellow, 8-4, in the first round of the Division I doubles flight.
The tournament featured participants from 23 schools: Armstrong Atlantic, The Citadel, Clemson, East Tennessee State, Florida, Florida Gulf Coast, Furman, Georgia, Georgia College, Georgia Southern, Georgia Tech, Kennesaw State, Kentucky, Liberty, Lipscomb, Mercer, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, North Florida, Presbyterian, UT Chattanooga, Tennessee Tech, and Vanderbilt.
The Paladins will compete at the ITA Men's All-American Tennis Championships in Tulsa, Okla., Oct. 3-7.
