TULSA, OKLA. -- Furman men's tennis player Andrew Mellow dropped a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 match to Facundo Lugones of TCU Monday in the qualifying round of the ITA Men's All-American Championships, being held this week at the Michael D. Case Tennis Club in Tulsa, Okla.
Mellow, who is making his first appearance in the tournament, will continue play on Tuesday. A senior from St. Louis, Mo., Mellow is ranked #78 in the ITA National Preseason Rankings. Last season, he was named to the All-Southern Conference first team for singles.
At this week's tournament, the nation's top collegiate tennis players are competing in the ITA's first national event of the 2012-13 season. The qualifying draw, which began on Monday, features 64 players. A field of 64 singles players and 32 doubles teams will then compete in the main draw on Oct. 4.
Singles quarterfinalists, doubles finalists and consolation champions will receive an automatic entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Nov. 8-11, held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, NY.
