Mellow Reaches Round Of 16 At ITA Regional Championships
CARY, N.C. -- Senior Andrew Mellow reached the round of 16 in the singles main draw to lead the Furman men's tennis team at the USTA/ITA Carolina Regional Championships, which showcased the top men's tennis players from the states of North Carolina and South Carolina at the Cary Tennis Park this weekend.
Mellow earned a bye in the first round then defeated Jo Ho of Wake Forest, 6-3, 6-2, in the second round. In the round of 32, Mellow notched a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Joran Vilegen of East Carolina before falling 6-3, 6-2 to North Carolina's Esben Hess-Olesen in the round of 16.
Paladin freshman Matt Browne beat Leo Christofides of Coastal Carolina, 6-3, 6-4, in the tournament's opening round of singles then dropped a 6-4, 7-5 decision to Elon's Brian Kowlski in the round of 64.
In the doubles main draw, Mellow teamed with junior Joel Cook to beat Andrew Brigham and William O'Connell of Presbyterian, 8-3, in the opening round of competition. The duo was defeated by Clemson's Dominique Maden and Yannick Maden, 8-6, in the round of 32.
Furman will compete at the Crimson Tide Fall Championships in Tuscaloosa, Ala., November 2-4.
