Furman Opens Season WIth 6-1 Victory Over Florida A&M; Paladins Fall To #32 Florida State In Twin Bill

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Furman men's tennis team opened the 2013 spring season Saturday with a 6-1 victory over Florida A&M at the Florida State Indoor Facility in Tallahassee, Fla., then fell to the Seminoles, ranked 32nd nationally, to conclude the day's play.

Versus the Rattlers, junior Joel Cook and senior Andrew Mellow combined for an 8-7 win over Salif Kante and Takura Happy in the top double spot, while Florida A&M's Chidi Gabriel and Admire Mushonga handed Paladin junior Alex Christ and sophomore Richard Casagrande an 8-3 loss in the second doubles match-up.  Furman junior Tyler Droll and rookie Matt Browne won by default at number three doubles, giving the Paladins the doubles point.

In singles play, Kante defeated Mellow, 6-4, 6-4, at number one, before the Paladins swept the final five matches.  Christ came from behind for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 win over Gabriel at number two, while Cook defeated Happy, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, at number three.  In the fourth singles match, Brown beat Mushonga, 6-2, 6-4.  Sophomore Jacob Behal posted a 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory over Temuera Asafu-Adjay at number five singles, while senior Robbie Aru won by default in the sixth singles spot.

Florida State completed a sweep of the Paladins in the afternoon match, as #107 Dominic Cotrone defeated Mellow, 6-1, 6-1, in the top spot, and #99 Benjamin Lock beat Christ, 6-3, 2-2, at number two singles.  In the third singles match-up, Jordan Kelly-Houston posted a 7-5, 6-4 win over Cook, while Anderson Reed handed Browne a 6-1, 6-3 loss at number four.  Andres Bucaro recorded a 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 win over Behal in the fifth-seeded match, and Michael Rinaldi rounded out the singles matches with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Aru.

The teams only played two doubles matches, with Rinaldi and Cotrone teaming up for an 8-3 win over Casagrande and Mellow at number two, and Joao Gauer and Blake Davis notching an 8-2  victory over Browne and Droll in the third-seeded match.

Furman (1-1) will play at Clemson Wednesday at 5 p.m.
