GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman men's tennis team plays host to the Iowa Hawkeyes Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the Mickel Tennis Center. The match marks the first meeting between the two schools.
Furman (6-7, 1-0 SoCon) is coming off a Spring Break trip to California where the Paladins dropped tough matches at Stanford, Pepperdine, and Cal Poly. In the Paladins' 5-2 loss at #42 Pepperdine on March 11, freshman Adam Steryous defeated 27th-ranked Alex Sarkissian, 4-6, 7-6(1), 10-7. Sophomore Ben Horst claimed the Paladins' other point of the day, picking up a 7-5, 2-6, 10-5 win over RJ Evangelista at flight six. Horst went on to beat Naveen Beasley of Cal Poly, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, at number six two days later.
No. 57 Iowa comes to Greenville with an 9-3 record after defeating The Citadel, 7-0, on Saturday. The Hawkeyes dropped a 5-2 decision at College of Charleston on Friday to open the team's Spring Break trip to S.C.
The Paladins a three-match home stand at the Mickel Tennis Center Tuesday. Over the years, Furman has been very successful on its home court. Over the past 12 seasons the Paladins have lost only 21 matches on their home court, posting an impressive record of 93-21 since 2002. Furman will face Southern Conference foe UNC Greensboro on Saturday at noon then entertain The Citadel on March 25 at 3 p.m.
