SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The Furman men's tennis team opened the 2017 fall season this weekend at the USC Upstate Spartan Invitational in Spartanburg, S.C.
Sophomore Jake Bhangdia reached the quarterfinals of the green singles draw. Bhangdia defeated Sam Schiano of USC Upstate, 6-1, 6-2, in the opening round then beat Presbyterian's Daniel Stenger Valdes, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(4) in the round of 8. In the quarterfinals, USC Upstate's Ankush Arora handed Bhangdia a 6-4, 6-1 defeat. In the black singles draw, senior Josh Pistorius downed Britton Bellamy of Presbyterian, 6-2, 6-2, before falling to Upstate's Ignacio Garrido, 6-2, 6-4, in the second round.
In doubles play, Bhangdia and Pistorius earned a bye in the first round then topped Finlay McFadyen and Andrew Sinai of UNC Asheville, 6-4, in the round of 8. Kennesaw State's Drew Lahey and Bryan Triana outlasted the Paladin duo, 7-6(2), in the quarterfinals.
Furman will compete at the Elon Invitational in Elon, N.C., September 22-24.
