ELON, N.C. -- The Furman men's tennis team won two flights this weekend at the Elon Fall Invitational in Elon, N.C.
Freshman Drew Singerman beat Elon's Louis Rico, 6-4, 6-1, to win the title in the Phoenix Singles draw. Singerman downed James Madison's Gonzalo Adis, 7-6, 6-2, in the opening round and defeated Zak Talic of College of Charleston, 0-6, 6-4, 6-2, to reach the finals.
Senior Cameron Green beat Oli Nolan of UNC Asheville, 6-1, 6-3, in the opening round of the Maroon Singles draw then defeated Clemson's Simon Baudry, 6-4, 6-2, to reach the finals, where he fell to Diego Quiroz of Winthrop, 6-4, 6-0. Also in the Maroon draw, freshman Ivan Mitric downed Gabriel Cucalon of N.C. Central, 7-5, 3-6, 10-6, in the consolation semifinals.
Junior Jake Munns reached the finals of the Gold Singles draw. Munns topped Daniel Hammarstedt of UNCG, 6-4, 4-6, 6-0, in round one and defeated Elon's Felipe Osses-Konig, 6-3, 6-3, in the second round. Munns dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision to Clemson's Beau Pelletier in the finals.
In doubles play, Munns and Mitric won the championship in the Gold draw. The Paladin duo beat Lanthiez and Mendoza of James Madison, 8-6, in the opening round and posted an 8-7 victory over Nolan and Cull of UNC Asheville to reach the finals. Furman scored an 8-5 win versus Talic and Bouley of College of Charleston for the title.
Green and Singerman teamed up to win the consolation final in the Maroon Doubles draw. Furman beat USC Upstate's Garrido and Ewers, 8-5 in the consolation semis then topped Vidgren and Grew of UNCG, 8-3 in the finals.
Furman will compete at the Belton Invitational in Belton, S.C., and at the Commodore Scramble in Nashville, Tenn., Sept. 29-30.
