MACON, Ga. -- Second-seeded Furman swept No. 7 UNCG, 4-0, Thursday in the Southern Conference men's tennis quarterfinals at the John Drew Smith Tennis Center in Macon, Ga.
The Paladins (16-4, 6-1 SoCon), winners of six-straight, move on to Friday's semifinal round, where Furman will face the winner of No. 3 Chattanooga versus No. 6 Mercer. First serve is set for 2 p.m. The Spartans conclude their season at 7-15.
Furman won two out of three doubles matches to claim the first point. UNCG's Roger Rogowski and Cooper Wyett teamed up to defeat Paladin sophomores Henrik Atlevi and Drew Singerman, 6-2, at flight three, then juniors Clarke Wilson and Jake Bhangdia beat Jack Burkill and Hugh Knapp, 6-2, at number two to even the slate. In the decisive flight one contest, sophomore Ivan Mitric and junior Jake Munns topped Ollie Palmer and Nico Grewe, 6-3, for the point.
The Paladins scored three singles points in straight sets to advance. Munns downed Knapp, 6-1, 6-1, at flight three, and Bhangdia outlasted Rogowski, 7-5, 6-3, at number four. At flight five, Singerman blew past Burkill, 6-1, 6-1.
The remaining three singles matches were unfinished. Palmer scored a 6-4 advantage over Mitric in the first set at flight one, but the second set was tied at 4-all. Grewe won set one, 7-6 (4), against Wilson in the flight two match, but Wilson led the second set, 2-1. At flight six, freshman James Roelofse entered the lineup to face Ian Melnik. Melnik took set one, 7-6 (5), but Roelofse had a 2-1 advantage in the second set.
