MACON, Ga. -- Second-seeded Furman topped No. 6 Mercer, 4-0, Saturday afternoon to reach the Southern Conference championship match. The Paladins, who are making their fifth trip to the finals in the past six seasons, will square off against top-seeded ETSU Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
With the win, the Paladins (17-4, 6-1 SoCon) extend their winning streak to seven matches. The Bears conclude their season at 11-15.
The Paladins won two out of three doubles matches to claim the first point. Juniors Jake Bhangdia and Clarke Wilson blanked Stathis Tsiranidis and David Georgadze, 6-0, at flight two, then Olivier Stuart and Nicolas Guillon held off sophomore Ivan Mitric and junior Jake Munns, 6-3, at number one. In the decisive flight three match, sophomores Drew Singerman and Henrik Atlevi outlasted Carver Arant and Fernando Guardia, 7-5, for the point.
In singles, Furman won three matches in straight sets. Wilson defeated Guillon, 6-2, 6-3, at flight two, and Singerman topped Georgadze, 6-2, 6-3, at number five. At flight six, freshman James Roelofse recorded a 6-4, 6-3 advantage over Guardia.
Matches at flights one, three, and four were unfinished. At number one, Stuart, who ranks 107th nationally, won the first set, 6-4, over Mitric, but Mitric led, 4-3, in set two. In the flight three contest, Munns scored a 6-4 win over Tsiranidis in set one, but Mercer claimed set two, 6-4. Munns led the third set, 1-0. At flight four, Arant defeated Bhangdia, 6-3, but Bhangdia came back for a 6-3 victory in set two. Arant led the third set, 1-0.
