Furman Rolls Past Coker In Season Opener, 71-42

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Celena Taborn scored 12 points and Furman showcased its entire 16-member squad in a season opening 71-42 victory over Coker in women's basketball action Wednesday night at Timmons Arena.

Taborn, a sophomore All-Southern Conference forward, delivered eight of her game high 12 points in the second period and played only three minutes in the second half as Paladin head coach Jackie Carson emptied her bench.

Redshirt junior guard Taylor Petty, making her Paladin debut after sitting out the 2017-18 season due to NCAA transfer rules, was the only other Paladin to reach double figures with 11 points.  The 2015-16 Big South Conference Freshman of the Year at Presbyterian College, played a game high 23 minutes, connecting on 4-of-12 shots, including a pair of 3-pointers.

Furman scored the final seven points of the first period, spiced by a Petty 3-pointer and layup with two seconds to go to grab a 14-11 lead.

The Paladins took command in the second quarter behind Taborn and sophomore guard Jarya Outten, who combined for 15 of Furman's 22 points in the frame to sent the Paladins into intermission with a 36-17 advantage.

Freshman Jade Kirasome tallied nine points, and three players — Outten, Le'Jzae Davidson, and Sydni Donovan — finished with seven points.

Furman connected on just 5-of-18 shots over the game's first 10 minutes before heating up in the decisive second quarter with 7-of-11 shooting (63.6 percent).  The Paladins finished at 42.4 percent (25-of-59)/

Furman also fashioned a 54-34 rebounding advantage.

Coker shot just 27.6 percent (16-of-58).

The Paladins play host to Middle Tennessee State on Sunday in a 2:00 p.m. contest.
