Knoxville, Tenn. – The Furman women's golf team carded an opening round 298 to hold seventh place after 18 holes at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Women's Championships at the par-72, 6,302-yard Holston Country Club on Friday.
Senior Stefanie Kenoyer birdied three holes to pace Furman with a first round 73 and grab a share of 13th place. Sophomores Alexa Rancourt and Laura Wearn each shot a two-over 74 to hold a share of 24th while junior Liz Wendt opened tournament play with a five-over 77.
Host Tennessee fired an eight-under 280 to hold an 11-stroke lead over second place Mississippi and Arkansas. TCU is in fourth place and Kent State in fifth after 18 holes.
Erica Popson of Tennessee carded a five-under 67 to hold a two-stroke advantage over teammate Nathalie Mansson and Kelli Shean of Arkansas.
Second round play is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning with final round action slated for 9 a.m. on Sunday.
