Charleston, S.C. -- Junior Laura Wearn carded an opening round 74 to help Furman into 13th place after one round in the season opening Cougar Classic at the par-72 Yeamans Hall Club in Charleston, S.C., on Sunday.
The Charlotte, N.C., native, who began play on the back nine, tallied birdies No. 15 and No. 18 while shooting one-over 37 on both the front and back nine. She shares 37th place after 18 holes in the 54-hole tournament.
LSU fired an eight-under 280 to open up a four-shot lead over second place Florida and five shot advantage over third place North Carolina. North Carolina State, Alabama and Tennessee rounded out the top six after one round in the 22-team event.
The Lady Vols' Erin Popson shot a six-under par 66 to take a one stroke lead over a group of three players tied for second at five-under 67.
Round two is set for Monday morning with final round action slated for Tuesday.
